CRAFTS - Sponge Soap Dish

Sponge Soap Dish
I don't know about you but I feel as though my bars of soap melt faster and faster!  Ever the penny pincher, I make it my business to get every last bubble out of my bar of soap!  So when I saw the idea of a sponge soap dish, I HAD to make one!

For this project you will need:
1 large sponge (available at the hardware store- makes 2 dishes)
Scissors
Bar of soap
Pen or marker

Our bathrooms tend to have soap dishes that look like this.

Standard Soap Dish :-(
The problem is that every time you put the wet soap back in the dish it melts a little into an unusable mess.  My hubby loves African black soap so what you see here is the ghosts of black soaps past!

By using a sponge soap dish, any melting soap goes into the sponge which you can use to wash your body!

Start with a large sponge from the hardware store.  I found this one at Home Depot for about $2.

Start with a large sponge

Next measure your soap against your sponge to make sure you've got the right size sponge.

This sponge is large enough to make 2 soap dishes for my Dove Soap.

The size is just right!

Mark and cut the sponge in half.

Mark the sponge
I used sewing scissors to cut the sponge.

2 Soap Dishes
Center the soap on the sponge.  Trace around the soap.

Trace the bar of soap

Optional - use the scissors to trim the edges of the sponge so that all of the edges are rounded.

Trim the sponge edges
Bend the sponge in half and begin cutting out the space for the soap.

Bend the sponge for cutting

Cut our a space for the soap
Be careful not to cut all the way through the sponge.

Done!
The soap should sit comfortably in the sponge but not too deep.

Action shot!
My sponge soap dish lives in my shower.  While it's a moist environment, water does not spray directly on the sponge when the shower is in use.

If it turns out that you don't need 2 soap dishes, use the other half of the sponge to make Mailable Birthday Cake!
