First a brief disclaimer:
This pattern making technique is ideal for small crafts (tea wallets, mama cloth, sandwich wraps, etc). It's especially great when the pattern will be used over and over again.
To make a pattern you will need:
Measure all parts of the item you wish to make the pattern for. If you don't have the item on hand, sketch a rough draft and measure your rough draft.
Measure the width
Measure the height
Measure the pockets
Trace the item
Add 1/4" to all sides
Measure your paper pattern to make sure that all sides are the proper length.
Pin your paper pattern to a piece of felt.
Place pattern on felt.
Cut out your felt pattern.
Label your pattern
Label your pattern with any relevant instructions. My tea wallet pattern needed several markings.
Mark pattern as necessary
Mark for snap placement
Fully marked pattern
Repeat this process for all pattern parts.

You pattern is now ready to use!
Use a safety pin to secure all pattern pieces for storage.
