Home Repair / Improvement - Book Shelves

5:15 AM

The idea to build these shelves literally just popped into my head.  I was sitting in the family room watching TV on the morning of black Friday (that's the Friday after Thanksgiving for our non-American friends) and pop - there it was.

But wait a minute I really should back up.  I live in a home that has 3 children so things are usually a mess.  This is what the space looked like BEFORE I added the shelves.

BEFORE
It's hard to tell from the picture but this space is about 30" across and 24" deep.  It was built to hold firewood.  We have a lovely fireplace, but almost never sees a fire.  As a result we rarely need fire wood.  And so this space is the space where books, toys and kid related junk lands.  It's wasted space.  So I thought to myself - "self, that space needs a book shelf" and so I built one!

This is about a year's worth of fire wood!
I needed something basic and only about 12" deep.  The cords for the TV and cable box sit in the back of this cabinet and I wanted easy access to the cords, but I didn't want to have to look at them everyday.

After a bit of measuring and cutting in the back yard, I came up with this.

Basic self insert

It's made from scrap wood (1/2" ply)  and spray painted with paint left over from the cake project.

Mailable Cake Project

The shelf is so simple.  It's literally a wooden letter H with a back screwed on.

I slid the shelf in place to see if it would fit.  It did.  That's it - All done.

Just add books!

After I added the books I realized that the cabinet itself could use a nice paint job.  So It got a nice touch up to complete the new look!

Now this space is MUCH neater (at least until the kids come home)!  YAY!

Long time readers of this blog will remember the play house in the picture above.  You can read all about that project here!

PRO TIP:
Since we don't really use our fire place, I'm thinking of using this same basic design to build a book shelf inside the fire place.
